10 Verified Ways to Make Money Online in Kenya

Making money online in Kenya and elsewhere is a gold mine, but has also left many young people vulnerable to fake online jobs, call them scams. This article is not about get-rich-quick schemes which are unsustainable and illegal ways of making illegitimate or no money online.

You are certainly not here looking for gambling tips or the latest pyramid schemes that will promise to multiply your money in a matter of a few 60-second sessions.

Instead, with elaborate examples, we shall discuss practical, evidence-based, sustainable, and easy ways to make money from home in Kenya.

avoid-make-money-online-scams

Right from the onset, it’s important to highlight that just like any other legit business, making legit money online requires patience and hard work.

What I mean is, you do not expect to subscribe to an online money-making site and wake up the next morning with a five-figure amount reflecting in your M-Pesa wallet or Bank account.

In fact, that is one of the most obvious ways of detecting online scams. The speed with which they promise to deliver returns on investment is enough evidence that they are online scams.

Walk with me to the very end. I am going to share, with clear examples and guidelines, addressing all the possible concerns.

1) Make Money by Blogging

make-money-online-blogging

Blogging is not a preserve for a few popular individuals living in Nairobi or wherever.

Anyone can start a good blog and share information about just anything, and make money online in Kenya.

All you need is an idea and a platform.

I know many times sharing big stories on Social Media is termed blogging, but we will handle that sometimes later.

I am talking about creating a blog (a personal website), from where you can share your ideas, News, or any other content interesting to your audience.

And the good news is, you can (and should) earn money by sharing information on your blog.

So what do you need?

More than 70% of all blogs globally are created using WordPress, which is actually a free platform.

WordPress is an application that allows non-techies to create professional websites in a matter of hours, yes, even minutes.

All you need is a good web host to sell you a unique domain (e.g youridea.com) and you’re good to start.

Of course, there are several FREE blogging platforms out there, but their downside is they will never allow you the freedom to grow and monetize your content.

In most cases, they will make use of your content to generate money they will never share with you.

So you need freedom, which can only be found by obtaining your own blogging space. Call it a DOMAIN and WEB HOSTING.

And so if you are starting a new blog, I recommend you get your own domain and web hosting from Host Pinnacle Kenya.

HostPinnacle Pricing

HostPinnacle Domains & Standard Web Hosting Pricing

I recommend HostPinnacle because they are the most affordable, yet reliable web hosting company in Kenya.

How much? With Host Pinnacle, you only pay Ksh 1,500 and you get a free domain and one year Web hosting for your website/blog.

Host Pinnacle is a choice for many bloggers since they allow you to host more than one website on the same account.

And that’s important for a blogger. If you can set up two or three good blogs, you would be assured of some good income.

Remember to check this article for a detailed comparison of the top 10 best domain name and web hosting service providers in Kenya.

It’s important to mention that you will need to choose a good domain name, one that syncs with your brand, niche, and appeals to your target audience.

There are many profitable areas you can blog about: Technology, gadgets, health and fitness, career, politics, fashion, finance…yes even Gossip… The list is endless.

How do I Make Money with Blogging?

I have elaborately handled the trade of blogging in a separate article, How to Outshine The Billionaires Club of Bloggers.

Be sure to check it out. But in a nutshell, there are several channels you can use to make money from your blog/website.

1. Placing Ads on your Site

This is the most common method of making money from blogs, and probably the easiest.

You receive payment when your readers view and click on the ads. Your income, therefore, depends on the click-through rate of the ads on your site.

If this is your preferred method of monetization, you may consider using Google AdSense.

It’s also important to mention that certain ad types attract better returns. For instance, ads related to mortgages, insurance, and web hosting have better returns. (as good as Ksh. 70 per click)

And that will probably inform your decision on the area you intend to venture into.

Why? Because Google will display ads on your site based on your content relevance.

Take for instance Gossip stories. Though with large traffic volumes, they always yield low returns, since they attract very cheap ads (as cheap as Ksh.1).

It would therefore take you centuries to collect single shillings, with your target being outshining the billionaire club of bloggers.

2. Sponsored Content

You can still avail some space for sponsored posts on your blog. This allows you to earn money from other bloggers who would like to get some traffic from your blog.

And if you are into the murky political waters, you will get several opportunities to write content that elevates a particular political idea or person.

This will definitely attract a price, hence boosting your income.

2) Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is basically recommending certain products to your audience. Think of it as being a brand ambassador, and earning commissions in return.

affiliate-marketing

This is another fast-growing method of making legit money online, not only in Kenya but globally.

As an affiliate, your task will be to review a certain product on your site/blog with the intention of recommending the product to your audience.

When people buy the product by clicking on the unique link located on your site, you earn a commission.

Here is how Affiliate Marketing works

Suppose you have created a blog whose focus is insurance, and you are receiving some good traffic.

It would be prudent to check with the best insurance companies in Kenya, whether they have affiliate programs.

You then write a viral review of ‘The 3 Best Insurance Companies in Kenya’ and include the affiliate links therein.

This means that you get a commission for every sign-up coming from your blog.

Remember to give your audience a choice of the three best companies. At the end of the day, they will click on one of the links, making yours an almost sure bet.

A reliable Affiliate program should be as transparent as possible, outlining among other things the shelf life of the links.

You will mostly get programs whose links have an expiry of between 30 to 90 days.

What this means is you have an assurance of earning your commission if anyone clicked on your referral link, but buys a few days later.

How Profitable is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is not just a good revenue generator, thousands of multi-million dollar blogs based are based on affiliate marketing alone.

Their core business is just writing reviews comparing different products, drawing conclusions on which product is best.

I will give a good example. Nerdwallet is a Consumer Finance blog, essentially assisting people to choose the best loan facilities, insurance covers, credit cards, etc.

Nerdwallet Best Affiliate Blog

Nerdwallet Personal Finance Affiliate Marketing Site

For every person subscribing for mortgage, loans, or insurance by clicking on links on the site, the blog owner earns a commission.

And you know what? We are talking about Millions of dollars!

In fact, the blog receives more than 11 million visitors every month and earns more than Ksh 8 Million per month.

That’s pretty cool, right?

The beautiful thing about affiliate marketing is that it’s open to everyone. All you need to do is convince someone to buy a certain product by clicking on your link.

It works on Facebook. It works on Twitter. It works on Instagram. It has amazing results on WhatsApp

I know the next question would be, where do I get these affiliate programs in Kenya?

In the next segment, we explore the most reliable affiliate marketing programs available in Kenya.

1. Biashara Place Affiliate Program

Yes, we are actually giving you an opportunity to make some good money from home by referring businesses to Biashara Place.

At Biashara Place, we have the most attractive offer for affiliates, with a 50% commission for every referral made to new sellers.

This allows you to earn between Ksh. 250 and Ksh. 4,375 in immediate commissions for every referral.

VENDOR PLAN HOW MUCH THE VENDOR PAYS HOW MUCH YOU GET
Bronze Package KES 500 KES 250
Silver Package KES 950 KES 475
Gold Package KES 2,450 KES 1,225
Platinum Package KES 8,750 KES 4,375

In addition, every successful referral earns you a 10% retainer bonus every month for the entire lifetime of your referred vendors.

We still pay referral commission for vendors who initially subscribe for a cheap package but later upgrade to a premium plan.

For instance, if you refer a business owner and they opt for the bronze package first, and they later subscribe for the platinum package, we will credit your account with Ksh. 4,375 and thereafter the appropriate 10% retainer bonus commissions.

In case you refer a seller but they do not use your unique referral link, contact us within 3 days. After confirming with the new seller, we will credit your account accordingly.

Some quick math. If you refer 10 gold vendors this month, you earn Ksh. 1,225 *10 = 12,250 in immediate commissions, and Ksh 2,450 every month as retainer bonus.

If you refer 5 platinum vendors (such as supermarkets, electronics shops), your earnings will be Ksh. 4,375 * 5 = 21,875 immediate commissions and Ksh. 4,375 every subsequent month as retainer bonus.

Referral Commissions reflect immediately the new seller subscribes for our vendor packages.

You can then request a withdrawal, which will be processed in less than 30 minutes.

We also give you a 1% Lifetime Commission for all the sales made on Biashara Place by your referred Vendors.

For instance, if a vendor you referred sells a product for Ksh. 20,000, you get Ksh. 200 commission.

Referral Commissions reflect immediately the new seller subscribes for our vendor packages.

2. Jumia Affiliate Program

If you have a blog with traffic coming in with the slightest intention to buy something, then you can take advantage of the Jumia affiliate program and make money online.

I am talking about blog topics like ‘The top 10 best Smartphones under 15k in Kenya’. Anyone clicking on such a link obviously has an intention to buy a smartphone, probably very soon.

Jumia will generate good-looking banners to place on your blog, displaying the product on offer.

Whenever anyone clicks on the link and buys a product from Jumia, you get a commission of up to 11%.

Still, if you do not have a website and you have a popular Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram page, you can share the links with your audience.

3) Become a Social Media Influencer

Make money on social media

The social media age is finally here. It has overshadowed the traditional marketing methods, making it a great opportunity to generate a good income.

Companies are aware of this, and they are now spending time and resources seeking to grab the attention of millennials using social media channels.

As of June 2019, Kenya had an impressive internet penetration of 23.34 %, with 46,870,422 having access to the internet.

People who are able to realize and take advantage of this great opportunity are known as Social Media Influencers.

You will be shocked to realize that while you spend more than 8 hours idling and chatting on social media, someone is making more than Ksh. 40,000 a day from the same site!

All you need to do is grow your social media audience and the level of trust the audience puts on your voice concerning a particular sector.

In other words, Trust is built, cultivated, and exploited if need be.

If you have social media platforms with a large audience, then you need to take advantage and start making good money.

On which Social Media Networks can I make money online?

Instagram and Twitter are the two most popular social media influencer platforms in Kenya. Facebook is still the most widely used social media platform in Kenya.

Instagram is still widely used, not as much as Twitter. On Instagram, brands will choose to use popular models to endorse their products.

However, the arrangement of discussions into hashtags on Twitter makes it the best for businesses and brands seeking to reach a large population within a short period of time.

For instance, Companies, Brands, Politicians, and Individuals will pay Twitter Influencers to run a campaign on Twitter and pay them, mostly immediately.

Kenya is approaching a campaign season, so you can be sure it’s going to be business unusual for all influencers.

These influencers are required to have a large number of followers, mostly above 50,000 Twitter followers.

If you have such a number of followers and in need of opportunities, just send us a text on WhatsApp and we will try our best to link you up.

Remember to check out this separate article on How to Grow your Social Media Followers on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

4) Manage Social Media Accounts

If you have good knowledge about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, and other social media networks, you can actually make money from it.

You don’t need any bachelor’s degree to be successful here. Just your skills, passion, enough to convince brands and people to let you manage their accounts for a fee.

Besides, there are several educational resources like Hootsuite, which will help you better your knowledge about emerging trends around all social media networks.

And that’s not all. Freelancing sites like Upwork and Freelancer are full of people looking for social media managers.

If you can grow several social media pages, you would actually sell them at a good price.

A Twitter account with 50,000 followers, for instance, is sold for between Ksh 20,000 – Ksh 25,000.

A Facebook page with 20,000 followers goes for Ksh 20,000. Instagram accounts are gems, also selling at prices that are half the number of followers.

5) Make Money on Youtube (Vlogging)

We live in a generation that massively devours billions of videos on YouTube every day.

Such a platform is a golden opportunity to make money!

Experienced YouTube users with popular channels will tell you that with just 1,000 views, you can something between Kshs. 200-400.

This means that if you have a channel with 100 videos 10,000 views per month, then that would be Kshs. 200,000 – 400,000  for you every month.

Do you want to see the evidence of money flowing down those Youtube Channels? Just check the top 250 Youtube Channels listed on Social Blades.

Churchill Show, with estimated monthly earnings of up to Ksh 3.5 million, ranks fourth after Citizen TV ( Ksh 7.7 Million monthly), Freeze Lists ( Ksh. 4.8 million monthly), and KTN News (Ksh 7.1 Million monthly).

And if you thought that only News Brands can make such large sums of money, you are absolutely wrong. Njugush is a Kenyan-based comedian with a growing YouTube Channel.

With less than 400 Videos, it’s estimated that my good friend Njugush takes home up to Ksh 900,000 in monthly YouTube earnings.

Ithagu Kibicho (aka Henry Desagu), has been in comedy for not more than 3 years now. He is best known as the man who advocates for the ‘rights of Team Mafisi.’ Or so he did.

Guess what? With just 181 video uploads, it is estimated that he takes home about Ksh. 1.3 million in monthly YouTube earnings.

You can also take advantage of the growing appetite for Youtube Videos. It doesn’t have to be News. It may be fashion. It doesn’t have to be comedy. It may be farming tips.

All you need to do is get started, start a YouTube Channel, grow your audience, get more views, and make money.

How do I make money using my Youtube Channel?

Just like blogs, Google AdSense is the primary source of revenue for many YouTube vloggers.

The AdSense program for YouTube is designed to display ads to your Youtube Video viewers.

However, there are a few other methods to monetize your Youtube videos, including YouTube sponsorships.

Remember to Check out this article on how to make money on YouTube.

6) Become a Jumia Sales Consultant

JForce Kenya

JFORCE- Jumia Sales Consultants Program

J-Force is a sales consultancy program that works on Jumia that allows anyone to make good money online.

The program allows individuals to earn commissions by simply assisting their friends or family members to place orders on Jumia.

Just that? Absolutely. A legit way to earn money online in Kenya.

All you need to do is register as a Jforce agent, find people in need of Jumia products, place orders on their behalf and earn some good commissions.

Tens of aggressive JForce agents will actually tell you that they had to quit their jobs in order to focus on JForce.

What more? You also earn huge bonus amounts for recruiting more JForce agents.

How do I get more clients as a JForce Agent?

Social Media Networks such as Facebook and WhatsApp are powerful tools you can use to advertise Jumia products.

This would really help you broaden your customer base beyond your close friends and neighbors.

And with the growing popularity of Facebook Advertisements, you can give it a try.

Facebook ads are an effective way to get more conversions.

With as low as Ksh 500, you can show selected products to over 3,000 people in a day.

You, however, need to create a legit facebook page and use your Jumia Sales Consultant title to show trust.

You can also build your own brand (such as an electronics shop) and affiliate it with Jumia just to increase trust and credibility with potential customers.
