Safaricom has now partnered with Samsung to sell an ‘Mkopa Smartphone’ on credit.

There is undeniably an ever-growing appetite for smartphones in the Kenyan market.

Statistics from major smartphone dealers such as Jumia indicate that more than 60% of Kenyans own smartphones.

This appetite has been met with the influx of affordable smartphones especially Chinese brands.

However, even with relatively low prices, many Kenyans cannot afford a smartphone upfront.

It is for this reason that online lenders such as Lipa Later do provide credit facilities to Kenyans who would like to buy smartphones.

The Lipa Later model allows you to acquire a device and then pay in monthly installments.

The 5,000 Huawei Y7 smartphones sold in 2019 on Lipa Later is probably the clearest picture that Kenyans are looking for smartphones on credit.

Mkopa Smartphone

Mkopa is one of the pay-go solar home system giants in Kenya, infact the pioneer.

Pay-go is a model that allows users to acquire gadgets and pay for them in simple daily or weekly installments.

Using this model, Safaricom’s Mkopa, Dlight, Startimes, and other companies have managed to avail solar home systems to thousands of homesteads with no access to the mains.

Well, Mkopa has now introduced an addition to their package, a smartphone.

Let’s have a look at the new Mkopa smartphone, carefully looking at the features and prices.

Mkopa Smartphone Features

Safaricom’s M-Kopa is not selling any of the Safaricom smartphones on credit.

Instead, they are selling the Samsung Galaxy A10s that gained entry into the Kenyan market in September 2019.

The smartphone currently retails for Ksh. 12,200 on Phone Place and Ksh 13,700 on Jumia.

The smartphone features a 6.2 inch HD LCD display and a 4,000mAh battery, sufficient to keep up with a normal smartphone user all day.

Mkopa Smartphone Prices

With the M-kopa pay-go plan, you are required to pay a down payment of Ksh 3,499 and thereafter daily installments of Ksh.60.

To completely own the Mkopa smartphone, you will pay the daily installments for one year (365 days).

This means that at the end of the repayment period, you will have paid a total of Ksh. 25,399.

Something worth noting is that incase you lose the smartphone, you will still have to pay the amount due in full.

Any default in the daily payments means that the Mkopa smartphone remains locked until payment is done.

Mkopa vs. Dlight Smartphones

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative gadget on credit, consider getting a Dight Smartphone.

Dlight sells a smaller smartphone for a deposit of Ksh. 2280 and daily installments of Ksh 40 for 8 months.

At the end of the loan period, what you pay for the Dlight M100 Smartphone is half what you pay for the Mkopa Smartphone.

A benefit you get for choosing Dlight over Mkopa is the Dual SIM that features in the Dlight M100.

Of course Dual SIM rocks!

In a country like ours, with telcos competing to outshine each other, Dual SIM is the only way to ensure you don’t miss out on an offer.

Being with two different networks would also ensure you get coverage all the time, even in places with poor coverage for one network.

So, for example, if you need to make a call in an emergency and you don’t have coverage on Safaricom, your Airtel SIM might come to your rescue.

Dlight has invaded another section of the market in Kenya with lipa pole pole smartphones.

The pay-go solar home systems giant is now appealing to thousands of Kenyans who cannot afford new smartphones.

Other Features

In a nutshell, these are smartphone features good enough for every normal user.

The MediaTek processor with speeds of 1.3Ghz guarantees fast opening of mobile apps, light-weight games and other online activities.

You still definitely expect some lag when playing demanding games on the Dlight M100 Smartphone.

If you are shopping for a smartphone for heavy tasks such as photo/video editing, playing heavy games, am sorry you will have to look elsewhere.

The Dlight M100 smartphone features Android 8.1 (Go edition).

The Go edition of android ensures you have enjoy improved memory usage for your DLight smartphone, now that it comes with 1GB RAM.

RAM and internal memory

The new Dlight M100 features 1GB RAM, not so good for gamers but sufficient for normal smartphone usage.

Let’s look at some technical bits.

Standard apps use between 150MB and 400MB of RAM.

Medium scale apps like YouTube, WhatsApp, light games and other media intensive will need more RAM.

Google Photos and Instagram are also in this RAM-hungry category.

These apps use between 500MB and 700MB of RAM.

This would generally mean that 1GB android smartphone RAM is enough for ordinary usage in 2020.

The challenge is that the Android operating system can quite often use up a substantial value of the RAM on its own, hence slow overall performance.

Still if you would like to be safer and can afford to pay for a smartphone in cash, check out the new Oppo A9 2020 or Infinix Hot 8 smartphones.

Then comes the 8GB ROM (commonly referred to as internal memory).

That’s good enough for a good number of music files, several videos and games.

Plus the expansion slot will accommodate an extra 32GB.

2500mAh is definitely not the best battery rating for a smartphone, but its good enough to sustain a day in normal usage.

By normal usage I mean calls, text and online activities such as WhatsApp and internet browsing.

If you are a person who travels a lot and need to stream those favorite movies, you may need to shop elsewhere.

Consider getting a smartphone with battery ratings of 4,000mAh and above, such as Infinix Hot 8.

The Infinix Hot 8 also features the much coveted fast-charge technology, which allows you to juice up your battery within a short period of time.

It’s however not available on credit terms in Kenya.

The Dlight M100 smartphone features a 5MP rear camera, good enough for normal shots.

The 2MP selfie camera will only give the expected results with enough light.

If this is not what you are looking for, you will have to get a smartphone in cash.

Dlight M100 Smartphone Price

Under the arrangement, Dlight gives you a smartphone after paying a down payment of Ksh. 2,280.

Thereafter, you are expected to pay Ksh. 40 daily installments for a period of 8 months.

You have a grace period of 10 days before you start paying the daily installments.

At the end of the repayment period, you will have paid a total of Ksh. 12,800 for the smartphone.

This model is similar to the Mkopa Smartphone which is basically a Samsung smartphone on credit.

Mkopa sells a relatively better smartphone though at a considerably high total price that is twice the market value of the Samsung A10s.
