Xiaomi announced the new Redmi Note 8 sometime in the month of August 2020, and is now available in many retail shops in Kenya.

This well-packaged smartphone will really overturn the tables in the Kenyan market, mainly because of the crazy prices.

The most notable selling feature of the new Redmi Note 8 is the 48MP AI quad-camera, featuring a whole 8000 x 6000 ultra-high resolution.

Plus the much-hyped Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor that employs AI to create intelligent experiences for mobile gaming, excellent camera capabilities and enhanced security features.

We will be discussing the finest details and implications of these features in a short while. But first, let’s talk about the face of the new Redmi Note 8.

A 6.3” Dot Drop Full-Screen Display

Xiaomi, like any other smartphone company, is focused on enhancing the smartphone experience for people who like watching videos and playing games.

For this reason, the new Redmi Note 8 features a 6.3″ dot drop full-screen display with Full HD Resolution (2340 x 1080 pixels).

What is a dot drop display?

Do you see that surface on top of your screen that houses the front camera and other sensors?

Smartphones with a notch want to use that space to increase the surface area of the display, while still maintaining the front cameras in their positions.

The motivation behind the notch is to use the top of your smartphone screen (an area that would go unused) to display information such as date and battery statistics.

Different companies have different ways of implementing the notch.

Some smartphones such as Infinix Hot 8 will feature a waterdrop notch, while others like the Redmi Note 8 will come with dot (circular) notch.

48MP Quad Camera

Gone are the days when we would have to tag a cameraman along as we went out for every trip.

If you are looking for a smartphone that will give you amazing pictures, then the new Redmi Note 8 may be your best choice.

The smartphone features a cool 48MP ultra-high-resolution rear camera with an f/1.75 aperture and  AutoFocus support.

Riding on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor also gives Redmi Note 8 a great advantage in image signal processing, Zero Shutter Lag, Hybrid Autofocus and Optical Zoom.

In addition to the main camera, the new Redmi Note 8 also features an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, probably making it smarter than any mid-range smartphone in Kenya.

And then, you are also treated to two 2MP macro cameras with f/2.4 apertures to enhance the quality of your shots by capturing even the most minute of details.

This great combination will give you photo resolutions of 8000 x 6000, a single-tone flash, Steady handheld night photography and portrait mode background blurring among others.

And if you are shooting videos, the quad-camera combination gives you an assurance of up to 4K recording at 30fps.

This can still be adjusted downwards, depending on your video quality needs, up to minimum values of 720p slow-motion recording at 120fps / 240fps.

4000mAh Battery, 18W Fast Charge

The new Redmi Note 8 retains the battery traits of its immediate predecessor, the Redmi Note 7.

Featuring a 4,000mAh large battery, the Redmi Note 8 boasts of the ability to sustain up to 25 hours of calling or 17 hours of non-stop video playback.

Whether these values are accurate or not, a 4,000mAh battery is a fair deal for a smartphone.

And with the fast charge technology, you can easily juice up your drained battery for a few minutes, maybe at a stopover while traveling.

The 18W fast charge has its roots from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor that powers the new Redmi Note 8.

The processor comes with an adapted Quick Charge 3.0 technology, which allows you to charge your smartphone up to 4 times faster than conventional charging.

2.0GHz Snapdragon Octa-core processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon is a processor type for smartphones, which has a better reputation than Mediatek processors.

Several benefits come with the Snapdragon 665 processor that powers the new Redmi Note 8.

Among them is the use of AI for advanced imaging, ultra-fast frame rates, smooth interactions, surround-sound audio, and realistic graphics.

The processor supports Vulkan 1.1 graphics that saves up to 20% power, hence improving your battery life.

It is the processor that features a Hybrid Autofocus, Optical Zoom, Zero Shutter Lag, and Multi-Frame Noise Reduction, for almost endless still and video capture possibilities.

And on matters speed, 2.5GHz from 8 processor cores makes the new Redmi Note 8 stand out among other mid-range smartphones available in Kenya.

4GB RAM, 128GB Internal Memory

The beautiful thing with Xiaomi smartphones is their different variants designed to meet the needs of different smartphone users.

Apart from the standard 4GB/128GB, the 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB Redmi Note 8 smartphones are also available.

4GB is such an attractive RAM value, that would ensure a better experience when engaging heavy apps, especially games.

And what can you do with 128GB internal memory? To be honest, quite a lot. You will accommodate more apps and games, plus music and video files.

Of course, the operating system will take up some of the space.

In conclusion, heavy gamers and above-average smartphone users will have a good time with the 4GB RAM and 128GB internal memory that Redmi Note 8 offers.

Water-resistant nano-coating

A smartphone is an investment, a life’s companion. You don’t want to lose it so easily. And thus comes the need for water-resistant smartphones.

Though without revealing the finest details, Xiaomi flaunts the new Redmi Note 8 as one with a Splash-resistant nano-coating.

While this might not match the highest smartphone water resistance ratings, its a big selling point for the new device.

Nano-coating involves placing the smartphone inside a vacuum and then pumping some vapor into the chamber.

The vapor spreads a thin film over and inside the device, coating the sensitive electronics with a material designed to deflect water.

These nanocoatings are designed to save devices from brief exposure, not minutes or hours spent underwater.
